Key Largo - An elderly man called the Sheriff's Office Wednesday and reported an apparant roofing scam.
The victim lives in the vicinity of the 99 mile marker. He said three men in a truck pulled up to his house. They told him they'd been doing work for a neighbor of his, and noticed he (the victim) had a number of missing or damaged shingles on his roof. As two of the men continued talkign to the victim, the third one climbed up on the roof. When he came down, he said he saw damage, and suspected there was a leak inside.
They went inside, and found an alleged leak on the ceiling of one of the bedrooms. The victim later told deputeis there was no leak there prior to the three men entering the room. The discussion then turned to money. The men said they had repaired the victim's roof with a "hydrolic" material. They told him he owed them $1,200.00 in cash.
The victim told them he didn't ask them to do the work, and didn't have the money to pay them. He said prior to going to the bank or writing a check, he would have to check with the "neighbor" they said they'd been working for. He walked down the street to check with the neighbor. When he returned, the men were gone.
Stock Island – Detectives from the Sheriff’s Special Investigations Division participated in a reverse sting operation Friday night, arresting six people on drug related charges.
Undercover operatives sold crack cocaine then arrested the buyers for possession and solicitation to purchase cocaine.
Thirty two year old Brandon Bryce, of Stock Island, 39 year old Barry Gregg of Stock Island and 44 year old Joseph Ferrigno of Tennessee were all arrested on the above charges after they exchanged cash for crack cocaine rocks. Thirty eight year old Jorge Llorens of Stock Island was arrested on the same charges after he traded two trays of Lasagna for one crack rock. Gregg was additionally charged with an outstanding warrant for worthless checks.
Silverio Diaz was arrested on possession and solicitation charges. He sped away from the scene in his blue Ford van after he realized he was going to be arrested. He was caught a short time later and was additionally charged with fleeing and eluding police.
49 year old Lamount Safford approached the undercover operative and told him he’d like to buy some crack but needed to go get some money. The operative gave him a ride to the Stock Island shrimp docks where he went on board a boat. He came back to the vehicle a short time later and showed the operative two crack rocks, telling him he’d gotten it from someone on the boat. Safford was arrested and charged with possession of cocaine.
Trauma Star was used to transport a patient from yesterday’s fatal accident on Sugarloaf Key. The patient was transported from a landing zone at Sugarloaf School to Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami in 54 minutes.
Upper Keys – Two search warrants were served Tuesday in the upper Keys by the Sheriff’s Office Special Investigations Division. The searches led to three arrests, and the seizure of drugs and money. A man wanted on an outstanding warrant was also arrested after a traffic stop by detectives.
At 7 a.m., detectives served a search warrant at 172 Plantation Boulevard near the 88 mile marker of highway U.S. One. A search turned up 34 grams of marijuana, 15 ecstasy pills and drug paraphernalia. The resident, 32 year old John Pandolfe, was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. Five rifles and one handgun belonging to Pandolfe were seized. His girlfriend, 29 year old Shannon Griste, was also arrested. She was charged with an outstanding warrant for violation of probation.
The second search warrant was served at 141 Sunrise Drive at the 92 mile marker of the highway at 11 a.m. The search revealed 27 grams of marijuana, numerous items of drug paraphernalia, 10 illegal valium pills and $23,000.00 in cash. The resident, 55 year old Robert Lee Smith was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia. The cash was seized as suspected proceeds of drug sales.
Shortly before 5 p.m., Special Operations Detectives pulled a car over for speeding near the 92 mile marker of the highway and arrested the passenger, who was wanted on an outstanding warrant. 21 year old Henry Beaudion was charged with the warrant for violation of probation, reference aggravated assault with a firearm.
Pandolfe, Griste, Smith and Beaudion were all booked into the Monroe County Detention Center.
Monroe County – Two traffic operations last week successfully ticketed speeders and other violators on Highway U.S. One, and other roadways.
On Tuesday, April 2nd, two Traffic Enforcement Deputies worked between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Duck Key Boulevard and the Sombrero Beach School Zone. They issued 14 tickets, mostly for excessive speed and issued five warnings.
On Thursday, April 4th, Traffic Enforcement Deputies worked in three different locations in an effort to slow traffic on the highway. They targeted the intersections at State Road 4A on Little Torch Key, Sugarloaf Boulevard and Key Haven Road. 43 citations were written, mostly for excessive speed; 12 warnings were issued and one arrest was made for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Key Largo – Sheriff’s detectives from the Crimes Against Women and Children’s Unit are looking for a man who accosted a group of young girls outside the Key Largo K-Mart store, and masturbated in front of one of them.
The suspect first spoke with the three young girls inside the store Sunday evening at 6 p.m. He told them he used to work there, and that he suspected them of stealing something from the store. When the girls walked outside, he followed them as they walked down Sampson Road in Key Largo. He began yelling at them, telling them to go into a nearby wooded area. The girl’s were afraid he would hurt them, so they complied.
Once in the woods, the man told two of the girls to take a walk in the woods, and he told the other girl to take off all her clothes. He then masturbated in front of her. Afterward, he allowed the three girls to leave. The victim told her mother what happened, and her mother called the Sheriff’s Office to report it.
The suspect is described as a white male in his 30s, described by the girls as “short and pudgy”, approximately five foot six inches tall and 190 to 200 pounds. He had short “buzzed” brown hair, bright blue eyes, and a pale complexion. His voice was described as high pitched. At the time of the incident he was wearing khaki colored knee length shorts and a blue, horizontally striped shirt.

Note: The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office TraumaStar helicopter transported patients involved in two separate incidents over the weekend. A trauma patient was transported from the Marathon accident involving a car and a tanker truck Sunday morning at 5:07 a.m. at the 53 mile marker. A second trauma patient was transported Saturday morning from an accident in Key Colony Beach. A 2 ½ year old child was flown to Miami Children’s Hospital after being hit by a car at 10:11 a.m. Saturday at the intersection of Key Colony Beach Causeway and 6th Street.

· 3/31 at 1:41 a.m., 107 mm U.S. One. Vehicle accident with vehicle off the roadway. One injury – needed to extract patient from vehicle. Involved some road block.
· 3/31 at 5:07 a.m. Car vs. Tanker truck at 11399 Overseas Highway in Marathon. Two dead, one trauma transport to Miami via Trauma Star.
· 3/31 at 11:57 a.m., Card Sound Road in Miami Dade territory. Motorcycle accident with two fatalities and other injuries.
· 3/31 at 1 p.m., Big Pine Key. Car almost went into a canal. Woman injured, transported to Fishermans.
· 3/31 at 2:02 p.m., 111mm, Highway U.S. One. Four vehicle accident with injury.
· 3/31 at 4:42 p.m., 83000 Overseas Hwy, Islamorada. Vehicle accident with one injury.
· 3/31 at 5:31 p.m., 100 mm U.S. One, Key Largo. Three vehicles with injury.
· 3/31 at 10:11 p.m., 106.5 mm, Key Largo. Multiple vehicles (maybe three), one head injury transported to Mariners. Partial road block.
Stock Island - This is a reminder that anyone with a car, boat, trailer, RV, truck, or any other item parked or placed on Maloney Avenue, Stock Island, should be aware that the street will be cleaned every month on the first Thursday and Friday of the month.
One side of the street will be cleaned this coming Thursday, with the other being cleaned the following day, on Friday. Prior to the cleaning, all items on the street will be removed and/or towed at the owner's expense.
Signs have been posted on the street which designate which side will be cleaned on which day. The cleaning will take place between 9 a.m. and 1 p. on both days.
