On the evening of October 3rd, 2005, a tractor trailer truck and a sport utility vehicle collided on the Seven Mile Bridge at the 41 mile marker of Highway U.S. One. The tanker truck, carrying gasoline, overturned and caught on fire. The fire burned for several hours, damaging the road bed of the bridge. The road was closed for almost 15 hours due to the necessity of inspecting the damage to determine the safety of travel over that area. The Department of Transportation eventually cleared the bridge for traffic.
